Raising Up Leaders In Zambia Africa

The average young adult in the rural village grows up without any sort of leadership training either in the public school system or through the local church. Often that is because most pastors and teachers in the rural villages were also never trained in leadership. Because of this lack of training the average church is not equipped with leaders needed to take the church to the next level. At Project Samuel we are working to bring the leadership training to these churches so that they can begin to grow and handle growth in a positive way.
Recently I began a weekly bible study with a group of young men and women from one of the local churches based on the curriculum, “Jesus On Leadership”. The bible study is about being a servant leader rather than leading by the standards of today’s secular leaders. The idea behind the study is to show the young leaders that participate, that the mentality which says that position is everything, is not the attitude that Jesus intended us to have as we lead his people. Often times, people associate leadership with position, and the truth is that position is nothing without people. This approach is very prominent in the rural villages of Zambia and is why we hear of so much corruption in the government systems.

Unfortunately, that same mentality is present in many of the churches as well. If we can somehow change that attitude and develop a newer more positive attitude of leadership in this new generation, then there is nothing to stop them from accomplishing whatever they put their minds to. It doesn’t matter if they become a pastor, a missionary or a farmer, they will have mind set it takes to succeed.
Take John for example. John is in his early twenties and is a prominent young leader in the United Church of Zambia. If John was to learn what it takes to be a servant leader, he would not only be able to use his new found skill in the church, but in his family owned grocery shop as well. Giving John the ability to lead like Jesus gives him an opportunity to better himself and those he leads.

Jesus made sure that his disciples were prepared to go on without him. Knowing that He would be crucified, He taught His disciples the same leadership skills He possessed so that one day they would be able to carry on without Him. And the Disciples trained others to take their place just a Jesus did with them. If John follows the program we are developing, he will have others to take his place in the church as he moves up, but not without first making sure that they are ready and that they are leading others as they were lead by John. This works for his business as well. As John’s business expands, others will be there to take his place as he assumes a higher position.
Rural villages are where life starts for many young men and women in Zambia. Some go on to live in the larger cities, others go to college, and some seek jobs in other countries. Many however will stay in the villages living, working, and adding to the village culture. No matter where they end up though, being able to lead others in ministry or on the job, learning to lead like Christ is a skill that all young men and women of Kapopo village in Zambia could greatly benefit from.
